Shoe Renu at Salvation Army Harbour Light

Winter Shoe Renu

This Saturday,  December 7th we will once again take your pre-loved shoes to the Salvation Army’s Harbour Light location on the Downtown Eastside. We collect your old running and walking shoes, hiking and work boots all year.  These “old soles” are then cleaned up and distributed to those in need in our community. The Shoe Renu program is a unique partnership between the Salvation Army, Rotary Club, BC Podiatric Medical Association and independently owned, running/footwear specialty retailers Rackets & Runners, The Right Shoe and Peninsula Runners. It is a grassroots initiative all about connecting some of our most vulnerable with some of life’s most basic necessities. The inaugural Shoe Renu Foot Care Clinic took place at the Salvation Army’s Harbour Light location on September 21st. The shoes that were given out were mostly gathered from participants of the 2013 Vancouver Sun Run as well as shoes dropped off at Rackets & Runners, The Right Shoe and Peninsula Runners.  At this particular clinic, we gave out 507 pairs of shoes. We met 507 extraordinary people.  It was powerful. The gratitude expressed over the gift of a pair of shoes and clean socks, was at times, almost overwhelming. On Saturday December 7th, from 9:30am – 12:15pm, and from 1:00pm- 3:30 pm, the 2nd Shoe Renu Foot Care Clinic will take place at the Salvation Army Harbour Light. Everyone who visits this pop-up foot care clinic will leave with one pair of pre-loved shoes, clean socks, a hat and gloves to help them through the winter.  As well, podiatrists Dr. Dana Alumbaugh and Dr. Anthony Yung will be available to examine and treat feet ailments. Podiatrists tell us the importance of taking care of your feet, which includes keeping them clean and protecting them from moisture in warm, dry socks and good shoes should not be underestimated. They remind, that at a very basic level, a clean, dry, comfy pair of shoes has the potential to save someone’s life. The Shoe Renu Program partners all believe making a difference in our community is something we can do together. We are happy to take your shoe donations during business hours, all year!
